Whitsunday Airport near Airlie Beach to Undergo Upgrade

Prosperine Airport, also known as Whitsunday Airport, is undergoing a $4million redevelopment as Whitsunday as announced by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh last Sunday.
"Realistically, we're not going to get an international airport for $4 million," Whitsunday Mayor Mike Brunker said about the restructure in the Whitsunday Times.
The investment is part of the airports short-term future which he hopes will one day result in a major air service.
"In the mean time, we'll just keep doing what we';re doing and improving our serice," he told the report.
But Save Our Foreshore spokeswoman contests the idea saying that, 'It's no surprise that in a time of high uncertainty, tenderers pull out.
"We back the community's position for the airport to stay where it is and be redeveloped appropriately.
"Most travel is centred around the core Whitsunday area and its population and tourism expansion is still where the future lies, so why would you disadvantage this for vested interests to the north and south?
"Our feedback is that most people regard the need for permanent international access unnecessary, particularly as one-off international charter flights are possible to land even now," she said about the airport located near tourist destination Airlie Beach.
Mr Brunker also reported that the Council has spent $1million on a new x-ray bag screening equipment for residents of Airlie Beach and the greater Whitsunday region.
