Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach, Queensland, is situated on a peninsula on Australia's mainland, in the centre of the 2,000km stretch of the Great Barrier Reef, in the Whitsunday Island region.

The town is well positioned for locals and visitors to sail between Whitsundays's 74 islands or take a cruise, and Airlie Beach also has a ferry service to most of the islands.

Airlie Beach history

Australia's Whitsunday Islands was named by James Cook in 1770. He named it when he passed through the area on Whit Sunday, a Christian celebration also known as the Pentecost. Now, Airlie Beach residents celebrate the Blessing of the Fleet on Whit Sunday each year.

Airlie Beach climate

A popular tourist destination, Airlie Beach has a sub-tropical climate and experiences much humidity in the warmer months - a result of hot temperatures combined with wet weather.

The warmer weather attracts cyclones from January to March. Be careful also of stingers that occupy Airlie Beach from November to May and utilise the swimming lagoon on the beach's foreshore. The climate becomes dryer and cooler when winter arrives.
