Australia's Whitsunday Islands was named by James Cook in 1770. He named it when he passed through the area on Whit Sunday, a Christian celebration also known as the Pentecost. Now, Airlie Beach residents celebrate the Blessing of the Fleet on Whit Sunday each year.
